Texting while driving is an epidemic more widespread than many of us may realize. Currently, in the U.S. there are more than 250 million cellular phones in use. Out of that at any given moment more than 800,000 people are texting while driving.
You may be saying to yourself "so what" there are a lot of people texting while driving. What's the big deal?
Car and Driver conducted a study that measured a drivers distance and response time to stop travelling at 70MPH. The study showed that it took the intoxicated driver four feet more to stop compared to the sober driver. The shocking part of the study came when they examined texting while driving. It took the person who was texting while driving 70 feet to stop compared to the sober driver.
Texting while driving takes away three critical things needed for safe driving:
1) You Hands
2) Your Eyes and,
3) Your Concentration
A driver who is texting uses his hands, eyes, and concentration to text. This puts them and everybody else around them at risk and what makes texting while driving more dangerous than an intoxicated driver.
Let's take this line of thinking a step further. There are 800,000 people at any given moment who are distracted by texting and driving. Hazardous driving conditions today are at a whole new level. With 800,000 texting you can be fairly certain that there may be someone around you who is distracted by texting.
The statistics show that driver related injuries and fatilities are up due to this lethal combination of texting and driving. Join us in making a personal pledge in saying "NO" to texting while driving.
